The NX offers three distinct powertrains. The GLA offers one, in two states of tune. Both brands use forced induction and both electrify to some degree, but the depth of the two lineups is not comparable.

What Stands Out

1. The NX 350 out-torques every GLA below the Mercedes-AMG model — 317 lb-ft against 258 — and delivers it low in the rev range, which is what you feel merging onto Highway 41 or climbing toward the foothills east of Clovis.
2. All-wheel drive is standard on more of the NX range. The NX 350 and every NX 450h+ include it, and the NX 350h offers it. On the GLA, 4MATIC is a paid option below the Mercedes-AMG model.
3. The Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 is the quickest vehicle here at 5.1 seconds to 60 mph, ahead of the plug-in NX 450h+ at 6.0 seconds. It also carries the highest MSRP in the GLA lineup at $59,800* and, like every GLA, no towing rating.
4. Towing is a real capability gap. Every NX powertrain is rated at 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. Mercedes-Benz publishes no towing rating for any GLA.

Fuel Economy and Electrification

This is the widest margin in the comparison, and the reason the hybrid is the volume seller.

Lexus publishes the NX 450h+ figures as projected EPA-estimated ratings determined by the manufacturer; final EPA estimates were not available at the time of publishing, and city and highway values are not separately published.

Comparing like drivetrains, the all-wheel-drive NX 350h holds an EPA-estimated eleven-MPG combined advantage over the GLA 250 4MATIC. The gap is widest in city driving, where the hybrid’s electric motor handles low-speed work. In the other direction: the gas-only NX 350 is the least efficient non-Mercedes-AMG vehicle here, so the hybrid is the configuration that wins this category.

The NX 450h+ is a different proposition again: its projected EPA-estimated electric range covers most Fresno-area commuting without using gasoline, and it recharges in roughly three hours on a 240-volt connection. Mercedes-Benz wins the standard-screen comparison on paper — dual 10.25-inch displays on every GLA, with a larger base touchscreen than the NX’s. That’s a fair point in its favor.

Lexus wins on what sits behind the screens. Ten speakers are standard on every NX, while the GLA’s upgraded Advanced Sound System is an extra-cost option. Navigation is standard on the NX and an extra-cost option on the GLA. And the NX’s 14-inch display and Head-Up Display, both standard from the Luxury grade up, have no GLA counterpart at any price.
